The Mercedes A-Class is the cheapest Mercedes model on the market, and it becomes even cheaper when you take a look at used cars. Mercedes models tend to be placed towards the high end when it comes to pricing, so buying a brand new model can often be a major financial undertaking. Yet, despite the high prices, the Mercedes A-Class is one of the most popular cars in Britain.

The A-Class underwent a major overhaul back in 2018, introducing super-slick technology and more efficient engines, but the previous-generation A-Class remains a popular, and its vastly reduced prices make it a difficult factor to ignore if you're interested in buying a great value Mercedes.

Because it has been such a popular car, it's also incredibly easy to find a used A-Class at a decent price. As it stands there are currently 1320 used models available on BuyaCar, with PCP finance costs starting from £224 per month. Considering that's similar to what you would expect to pay for a similarly aged Renault Clio or Ford Fiesta, the chance to showcase the Mercedes badge on the front of your car is rarely more affordable.

We suggest you read on if you'd like to make the most of the cheap Mercedes deals currently available on BuyaCar. We have great deals on a whole range of A-Class models, from affordable and economical diesels to fast and exciting performance-enhanced AMG versions.

Mercedes A-Class badging

Mercedes derives its model names from a combination of a car’s engine and equipment level. For example, the Mercedes A180d AMG Line is broken down as follows:

180 you could be forgiven for thinking the '180' uses a 1.8-litre petrol engine, but it actually uses a 1.5-litre engine that produces around 109hp depending on model year. The most popular engines you'll see in petrol or diesel form are the 180 along with 200 and 220, but there are others too.
shows that the engine uses diesel power, but Mercedes used to use CDI in earlier models. No letters after these numbers means it's a petrol model.
AMG Line is the sporty trim level that includes high levels of standard equipment

The A-Class range is kicked off with entry-level SE models followed by Sport versions with a slightly sharper look, then more sporty and luxurious AMG Line and finally the performance AMG variants at the top of the pile.

Mercedes A-Class equipment packs

Additional optional equipment packs were available on the A-Class and these would bundle in plenty of desirable kit, so it's worth deciding which you'd like. Executive, Premium and Premium Plus packs were all available when new, but be aware: not all packs were available on all trims.

An indication is that Executive models included a Garmin sat-nav, heated seats and self-parking abilities. Premium packs include this, as well as interior ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and driver's side exterior mirror, electrically folding mirrors, and LED headlights. Premium Plus tops the list with all of this, plus keyless entry and go, electrically adjustable front seats, and a retractable sunroof. Prices varied from £1,000 to £3,000 for each of these.

Check each model's specific equipment list, though, as earlier models were not equipped as highly.

Mercedes A-Class SE offers

The Mercedes A-Class in SE trim might be the cheapest version you can buy, but that doesn't necessarily make it the most popular. When you think about it, even the cheapest A-Class isn't exactly what you'd call cheap alongside a Ford Focus for example, so it would seem that most A-Class customers are looking to spend a little more in order to make the most of some of the more upmarket features of this car.

Later versions of the outgoing A-Class included 16-inch alloy wheels, a seven-inch media system with Apple CarPlay, fake leather seats, a reversing camera, and air-conditioning. Be aware, you'll only be able to find the lesser-powered models in this trim level: A180d, A200d, A160 and A180.

Mercedes A-Class AMG Line offers

AMG Line models added to the list of available engines the more powerful A220d and A220d 4MATIC - Mercedes talk for four-wheel drive.

Expect these to come with more aggressive body styling and alloy wheel designs, lowered suspension, uprated brakes, and sports seats.

One thing worth noting with the AMG Line cars is they came with run-flat tyres from the factory. This means that if you get a puncture, the tyre will hold its shape well enough for you to get to a garage for a repair, instead of having to stop at the side of the road to change a wheel.

With these types of tyres, manufacturers rarely include a spare or puncture repair kit. When buying used, however, be sure to check whether the tyres have been swapped for normal (less expensive) non-run flat tyres when buying on the used market.

Mercedes-AMG A45 offers

Considering it was hugely expensive new, this version sold surprisingly well. If you're hoping that has caused second-hand prices to fall through the floor, you'll sadly be disappointed. While this means that cash prices are high, however, it also makes used car PCP finance deals surprisingly affordable on the A45, as the car will still be worth a lot at the end of the contract, reducing your monthly payments.

The A45 uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine and four-wheel drive. The engine pumps out around 380hp and 475Nm of torque, which was claimed to be enough to fire the A45 from 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds.

The A45 comes with plenty of equipment, including a sporty body kit, twin-exit exhausts and AMG dials to name but a few features. There was also the option of an AMG aerodynamic styling package, which wasn’t cheap new and added a large rear spoiler and front splitter.

Mercedes A-Class special edition offers

As with many modern cars, the A-Class has been available with numerous special editions, including AMG White Art, AMG Night Edition and AMG Yellow Night.

Typically, these feature unique colour schemes and styling cues plus extra equipment. They are much rarer than the models mentioned above, so if you want an A-Class few others are driving they could be worth a look.
