BMW has a reputation for making cars that are fun to drive, and the 1 Series is no different. BMW’s compact hatchback first arrived in 2004 and, uniquely for a family hatchback, sent power to the rear wheels, making it feel more sporty than other models like the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and Ford Focus that sent power to the front wheels.

Driving enthusiasts loved the 1 Series for its agile handling and responsive steering - no matter how hard you accelerate, the front wheels won't spin nor will the steering wheel tug in your hands as with other hatchbacks.

BMW changed the recipe, though, with the latest 2019 1 Series, shifting to a more standard front-wheel-drive format with the intention of maximising space for rear passengers. The most powerful version does feature all-wheel drive, so it still offers strong traction when accelerating. Thankfully, the car retains the 1 Series' trademark composure on the road and a comfortable ride, meaning it's still one of the most satisfying hatchbacks to drive.

Despite being no bigger than the previous 1 Series, it has much more space for passengers thanks to a shorter bonnet and fewer mechanical bits under the rear seats - as power is no longer sent to the rear wheels. People riding in the back are the biggest beneficiaries, as most of the extra space is allocated to rear legroom.

Rear passengers over six feet tall might still find headroom a little tight though, as the 1 Series has quite a sporty profile with a roofline that dips noticeably towards the hatchback. Meanwhile, the boot compares favourably with its rivals too, and matches the 380-litre capacity of the Volkswagen Golf. The 1 Series now only comes as a five-door these days like most hatchbacks.

Up front, the cabin feels every bit as upmarket as the previous 1 Series, with a driver-centric dashboard angled towards the person behind the wheel and clearly laid-out instruments and controls. There’s an impressive 8.8-inch media system for music, sat-nav, air-conditioning and other vehicle controls as standard too.

Engines range from economical three-cylinder motors shared with Mini models (Mini is owned by BMW), to larger petrol and diesel engines and the range-topping 306hp M135i, which features four-wheel drive for containing the significant amount of power on tap, which means this version offers the performance to challenge many sports cars.

The 2019-on BMW 1 Series is offered in a familiar range of trim levels including SE, Sport, M Sport and the range-topping M135i. Scroll down to see the best used BMW 1 Series deals available now, and to find out just how much you could get for your monthly finance budget with PCP finance.

BMW 1 Series PCP offers 2021

BMW 1 Series SE offers

The entry-level 1 Series SE has a very healthy specification, with plenty of kit to keep you interested. One of the key highlights is the 8.8-inch media display screen with a rotary controller located in front of the gear stick and touch controls, which includes Apple CarPlay, as well as a Bluetooth phone connection.

SE trim also comes with air-conditioning, cruise control with autonomous braking function, and drive modes to change the feel of the car. There’s a sporty three-spoke leather steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors and automatic windscreen wipers, while outside you get 16-inch alloy wheels, plus LED headlamps and foglights.

Moving up to the Sport from the SE gives you more eye-catching 17-inch alloy wheels, plus specially designed and painted front and rear bumpers with extra air intakes, and high-gloss black trim around the car.

There’s also a tweaked grille design with high-gloss black struts and a chrome frame. Inside you get sports seats, different upholstery with orange or grey highlight stitching, and dual-zone climate control - allowing driver and passenger to set different temperatures. BMW 1 Series M Sport offers

M Sport spec has long been a popular trim level across a range of BMW models, and M Sport is very popular on the 1 Series. It definitely looks the part with racy 18-inch alloy wheels and a sporty bodykit including different bumpers and side sills for an aggressive look.

Inside things are a notch sportier too, thanks to leather upholstery, a black roof lining and luxury features such as heated sports seats. There’s also a three-spoke M Sport multi-function steering wheel, a short-shift M gear-knob for manual cars, and a sharper feel to the way the car drives with uprated sports suspension.

BMW 1 Series 128ti offers

Equipment for this model is based on the M Sport, but it bridges the gap between that and the more expensive M135i. Unlike its performance sibling, it's just front-wheel-drive, but uses technology like a limited-slip differential to deliver power more efficiently.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. There's 265hp on tap, so it's hardly slow - it's good for 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds but BMW still reckons you can achieve around 45mpg.

BMW M135i xDrive offers

The flagship 1 Series ratchets up the sportiness, and the price, though in exchange you get a healthy dose more power than with other 1 Series models. If you can afford the monthly payments though, the M135i feels sporty and luxurious inside.

As well as bespoke styling touches including an aggressive front end, rear spoiler and M logos all around the car, you get standard four-wheel drive (known as xDrive), and digital dials with a 10.3-inch display, as well as further uprated suspension and brakes.
